How to Measure Your Website’s Performance

Do you know how to get the numbers you need to accurately evaluate the performance of your company’s website? Before selling one of my early sites, I had no idea.

In the late 90s I had a web site I’d developed that was getting well over a million ‘hits’ and over three hundred thousand ‘page views’ a month. When ZDNet approached me about buying the site. I thought I’d hit the jackpot and that it must be worth tens of millions. Before we even started negotiating on price, though, they wanted to run a test on my site by adding code to the homepage so they could do their own evaluation.

The numbers I had been tracking, hits and pages views, didn’t help them determine the value of the site. Hits are the number of individual gifs and items that load each time someone visits a page. Page views tell you how frequently different parts of your site are being seen, but you could have a large number of page views triggered by a small audience.

ZDNet wanted to put tracking code on my homepage to determine the number of ‘unique visitors’ to my site. This would tell them how many visitors I was attracting per month and what percentage of these were unique visitors; new visitors who hadn’t already been to my site or visited one of their own sites.

The more ‘unique visitors’ you are attracting to your site the better, but you could attract a zillion visitors a month and it wouldn’t help you at all if none of them contacted you or bought from you or at least clicked on the ads on your site. The key question in evaluating your web site’s performance is:

What percentage of site visitors take the action or actions you want them to take, whether it is subscribing to your newsletter, emailing you, calling you to inquire about your services or making a purchase?

To evaluate your site’s performance first look at your web usage statistics to identify the number of unique visitors your site receives each month. Once you have this number, divide it by the number of people who took the action you wanted them to take. This is your site’s ‘conversion rate’ and is the second number you want to look at each month to determine how well your site is performing.

Let’s say that you had thirty thousand unique visitors each month and generated 30 sales. Your conversion rate would be one-tenth of a percent. If you generated 300 sales, your conversion rate would be one percent. A 1% percent conversion rate is a healthy rate for most businesses on the web.

If you offer a free newsletter, your objective is to get as many people as possible to sign up for it, to maximize your conversion rate. While you may only get 1% of people to buy your products during a given month you should be able to get 5-15% of site visitors to give you their contact information so you can stay in touch with them.

5. How and when is the fee collected? Will you be billed, or will it be deducted from your account directly? Monthly? Quarterly?

6. Type of advertising? Exactly how will they advertise the units and what will it typically cost you?

7. Time and cost to prepare units? What’s the typical cleaning fee on a vacancy, and how long will it normally be before it’s rented out again?

8. Type of accounting? Which types of reports do they send, and how often? How are accounts set up?

9. Their hours of operation? What are their business hours, and who takes weekend calls?

10. What needs owner approval? What dollar amount needs your authorization, and is this negotiable?

You should ask other questions, based on your particular needs and the particular property. Be sure to ask everything up front, and you’ll have fewer misunderstandings, and a good manager. Real estate investing and being a landlord is a lot less stressful with a good property management company.

Fifita is a great run clogging nose tackle prospect. He has everything you look for except great height. May not be starting material, but he would be a good backup to Ferguson.

6th – FB JD Runnels 5′11 238 4.65 Oklahoma

Runnels is a punishing run blocker who brings everything you want in a lead fullback except size. I believe he can overcome this and become a good starting fullback right away. He is a decent athlete who is a good receiver out of the backfield as well.

7th – P Steve Weatherford 6′3 215 4.76 Ilinois

Steve is a great punter who has averaged about 44 yards a punt throughout his career. Has a good leg strength. Kicked off and was very effective at it. Was the school’s long distance field goal specialist. Made a 55-yard attempt. Good athlete. Needs to work on consistency and getting rid of the ball quicker.

First undrafted quarterback to be elected into the Hall of Fame

Warren Moon kept himself a busy schedule after high school he played at a junior college in Los Angeles and in the Canadian Football League before reaching the NFL. Based on his history, Moon knew better than to expect selection into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

For the first time since 2001, the maximum number of candidates was chosen, reinforcing the strength of the 15 finalists. Among those who didn’t make it are receiver Michael Irvin, former Vikings offensive tackle Gary Zimmerman, Buffalo Bills running back Thurman Thomas, Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas and Washington Redskins receiver Art Monk.

The former quarterback received a very nice surprise when he was elected along with five others last Saturday. He is the first African-American quarterback in the Hall of Fame. Among the others were New York Giants linebacker Harry Carson, Coach John Madden, Troy Aikman, Rayfield Wright, and late Reggie White.

If we compare, they’ve had very similar careers Aikman was the NFL’s top draft pick in 1989. and Moon was undrafted out of the University of Washington after leading the Huskies to an upset victory in the 1978 Rose Bowl. Aikman retired after 12 seasons because of concussions. Moon, even after playing his first six professional seasons in the CFL, played 17 seasons in the NFL. And Aikman won three Super Bowls with the Cowboys in four seasons, while Moon was unable to reach the Super Bowl.

While he lamented the final fact, Moon said his unusual career path made his selection all the more meaningful. Moon is the first undrafted quarterback to be elected into the Hall of Fame.
