Good Web Design

Comments Off

Too many web designers get confused about what type of site they’re creating — witness the site that was up for a long time . If you’re creating a site that’s for a media company (movie, music, etc.), fashion company, art school sites where there’s no accountability for the bottom line, then it’s ok to use “wild and crazy” design techniques. But remember, “It’s a temporary thing.” This type of design is not supposed to be serious and last forever. Have fun.

But if you want your website to look reasonable and is functional, devote your energies to keyword rich content, site maps, privacy policies and the other standards that seem to be missing from a lot of websites. The things that the Search Engines like to see and will reward with higher rankings. A ‘crawler’ can’t see fancy flash gizmos or premium quality images over 100 kb each.

If you’re creating a real web site for a real company, you have to choose a design that’s not quite as exciting. Something more responsible and restrained. Something dependable. Something you’d marry

It would have to be to keep it clean and simple. There is nothing worse than a cluttered looking website and there is nothing that will repel visitors more quickly than a slow loading website. Take a look at a few of the ‘TOP’ Internet based company’s websites like Adobe.com. The largest image on their Home page is 6 Kb. There is no Flash, no music. Even Microsoft.com has one small, unobtrusive ‘flash’ component in the bottom left corner and their largest image is 18 Kb.

Many private Internet users are using ‘56kbps dial up modem’ connections (according to research firm Instat-MDR). So, by building a website that is only accessible in a reasonable amount of time to DSL users, you are effectively disqualifying yourself from visits by 80 percent of the people likely to be interested in your product or service. They will not wait.

The Number 1 rule that every web designer should follow is to create a fast loading web site. You might have a great design but very few people are going to see it if it takes a long time to load. While designing a web site always think about how long it will take to load.

Minimize the use of images – Images do enhance a page but don’t make 80% of your web site only images. Instead break it down as much as possible to simple HTML. Very often simple designs are the best. For web design source files visit my site http://www.davbindu.com/

Optimize images for the web – Once you have decided on the images that you need on your site, make sure that it is optimized for the web. They should be in the gif or jpeg format. You can also minimize the size of the image by choosing the number of colors you need, from the color palette. The less the colors you choose, the less the size of the image.

Use Tables creatively – You can get some great looking designs by using tables creatively . Tables load very fast because it is just HTML code. Tables can be used in the homepage, menus or anywhere you like.

Cut down the use of animated gifs – Animated gifs take a long time to load and can also be very irritating. But since they catch your attention you could use small animated gifs to draw a visitor’s attention to a particular section of your site.Or design simple icons icons that add a little color and draw the attention of a visitor.

Use background images instead of big images whenever possible – Use background images whenever possible. This is usually a very useful tip for headers and footers. Instead of using an image of width 580 which is a uniform design you can use just a part of that as a background fill. This reduces the size of the web page as the image is small.

Try out CSS Styles – Have fun with CSS styles to get some cool text effects. Again, a CSS Style is simple HTML code so it loads very fast. You can create cool rollovers using CSS Styles.

Use Flash sparingly – There seems to be a lot of hype about Flash but I recommend that you minimize the use of Flash on a site. Don’t make entire sites using Flash. It may look great but it takes hours to load and can really put off visitors. If you do want to use Flash use it within an HTML site and make sure it loads fast.

Keep checking your load time – Last but not least, before you decide on the final design of your web site, check its load time on NetMechanic. This site gives you a free analysis of your web site which is extremely useful.

Fantastic Ski Conditions All over the European Alps

Comments Off

We have had almost two meters of snowfall during last week. The snow has been so deep that ski lifts have been closed, the train was stopped at Chamonix train station and not traveling up to Le Praz. Several roads have been blocked and snow warnings released.

This is in direct contrast to 2 winters ago, when we experienced the incredibly hot February weather conditions, mud showing on mountainsides, and reports that global warming would mean the finish of the ski industry in the European Alps. Indeed the OECDs study from winter 2005 predicted that global warming would make ski holidays far too pricey for many holiday makers, with a 3rd of ski resorts becoming insolvent with the disappearance of alpine glaciers. Glaciologists say that it is virtually impossible to attribute these annual variations in the snow to the effects of climate change.

So we might be experiencing the deepest downturn in almost 30 yrs, and the Pound has dropped to more levels compared to the Euro, but the snowboarding is fine, and the recent reservations highlight that snowboarders are enthusiastic to revel in the excellent snow with our self catered chalets full. This season is undoubtedly the finest in ten winters, and many people are announcing that it is the nicest ski snowboarding conditions in at least 10 winters.

Nevertheless recall that lots of snow like this means large risks of avalanche.

Ben Burns’ NHL Notebook (November 22)

After recently losing a game in which the team I selected dominated play and doubled it’s opponent’s total number of shots, I received an email asking me what is the most important ingredient necessary to win in today’s NHL.
I responded by saying that I didn’t have a definitive answer. Obviously, the key to winning is outscoring the opposition. However, pinpointing a single specific factor which enables a team to score more goals than its opponent is not so obvious.

Is it more important to score the most goals or to allow the fewest? Is it more important to have the best penalty-killing or to have the best power-play? How relevant are shots on goal?

Let’s take a closer look at the top-10 teams in a number of statistical categories and see if we can answer some of the above questions and determine the secret formula for success.

GOALS

Team Goals Per Game League Rank (Total Points)

Ottawa* 4.7 2

Philadelphia 4.4 9

Colorado 4.0 13

Los Angeles 3.8 4

Toronto 3.7 11

Detroit 3.6 1

Carolina 3.6 3

Dallas 3.6 10

Atlanta 3.6 26

Buffalo 3.4 17

*Note: The Sens would have the most points but have played fewer games than most teams

Colorado 0.90 13

Los Angeles 0.90 4

Detroit 0.91 1

Nashville 0.94 8

San Jose 1.00 21

Ottawa 1.00 2

There are many other statistics I could have analyzed, including goaltending, power-play conversion percentage, the percentage of shots and/or power-plays converted, and the percentage of penalties killed, to name just a few.
Still, I feel that those results would have demonstrated the same conclusion. There isn’t necessarily a single factor which has the biggest impact on success in the NHL.

One dimensional teams, like the defensive-minded Minnesota Wild or the offensive-minded Atlanta Thrashers, can be competitive. However, the best teams in the league, like the Ottawa Senators and the Detroit Red Wings, are extremely balanced and perform well in virtually all facets of the game.

A Little About Baseball History

Comments Off

There is evidence to suggest that in terms of baseball history, people played games that involved a stick and a ball, right back to the early days of civilization. Ancient cultures in Persia, Egypt, and Greece played ball and stick games for recreation and as part of special ceremonies where celebrations were rituals. Ball and stick games of this type spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages and became even popular as different varieties took hold. Europeans brought ball and stick games to the American colonies as early as the 1600s. Until the late 1700s, however, they were widely considered children’s games.

By the early 1800s, a variety of ball and stick games had also become popular in North America. Many people in northeastern cities such as Boston, New York, and Philadelphia played cricket, but rounders also began to take hold. Rounders most closely resembled modern baseball as we know it now.

This early version of baseball history then known as rounders, required a batter to strike a ball and run around bases without being caught out. Balls that were caught on the fly, or in some cases after one bounce, were commonly known as outs.

Varieties of rounders also involved the practice of plugging, soaking, or stinging the batter. This was where fielders could put runners out by throwing the ball at them as they ran between the bases. People used various names to describe it rounders depending on what part of the country you were in. It was also known as town ball, one o’ cat, and base ball (hence the now shortened version we know as baseball).

Americans began playing baseball in informal competitions in the early 1800s. By the 1860s, the sport, was being described as America’s “national pastime.” In 1845 Alexander Cartwright and the members of the New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club, devised the first rules and regulations for the modern game of baseball. The first game was held at the Elysian Fields, in New Jersey.

In 1858, the National Association of Base Ball Players, the first organized baseball league with tournaments and competitions between clubs was formed and in 1876 the first major league, the National League, was formed. This allowed states to play against other states. State teams were fed players from local leagues where the cream of the crop was selected to play for the states League team. Baseball is know one of the most popular sports in the country.

Open Source and Offshore Development

Comments Off

In combining Open Source software and offshore development, high quality, cost effective software is more easily obtainable. In fact, I suggest Open Source should always be a part of any outsourced software development, but that is a different topic. The focus of this article is how Open Source provides a foundation of trust and confidence when using and/or providing offshore software development services.

When purchasing software development services, many people make the mistake of assuming that the only reason to choose one person/company over another are pure coding skills. Simple as that right? Wrong. Developers also assume the person/company procuring software development cares deeply about Java vs. .Net vs. PHP vs. RoR. Wrong. Well, ok, maybe both of these points are not entirely wrong. Yes, people do care about coding prowess and technology infrastructure, but I believe there are many other factors when making an outsourcing decision.

People who purchase software want to have confidence and trust in the people they choose to develop software. Confidence and trust can be earned over time, but how does it start? Well, of course, the software developer(s) needs to have good references, case studies, professionalism and applicable skill sets. But, even after reviewing these factors, there might still be nagging doubts about trusting someone you have never met and the person or company was not a referral from one of your contacts.

Open source software is the foundation for confidence and trust when choosing to outsource software development. It is the catalyst to an acceptable answer to the “what is the worst that can happen” scenario. In other words, even if you make the wrong choice in outsource software development partner, your code, your infrastructure will still be based on Open Source which can be parlayed to different developers much faster than completely original code. In the worst case scenario, if the software being developed is not Open Source based, it will be much more difficult to replace the developers.

“Open Source” can mean different things to different people. In this article, my definition of Open Source is intended to mean complete products, tools, libraries, etc. with a vibrant community. (Read Succeeding with Open Source for one reference on choosing Open Source software) It does not simply mean the delivery of source code with the solution. In particular, the Open Source product, tool and or library needs to have other established resources, so new developers time spent analyzing code and infrastructure can be reduced. New developers to the project will spend much more time “getting up to speed” on architecture, if the software is not using community based Open Source software.

When implementing an outsource development strategy, choose developers that will use Open Source software in the overall solution. Using Open Source in the solution provides a shorter path to confidence and trust in outsourced software developers. Put another way, open source plays a positive part in the risk management of the decision to outsource. By choosing offshore software development partners that deliver based on community established Open Source with appropriate license for your needs, quality and the most competitive cost can be obtained.

End Golf Swing Confusion Forever!

End Golf Swing Confusion Forever!

We’re in the information age, and when it comes to the golf swing, this often means information overload!

As new golfers, we start out believing that there is one right way to swing, only to find out that there are just about as many swing methods as there are instructors. It seems that the more we learn about the golf swing, the more our minds are filled with confusing, contradictory information.

Until now, if two respected golf professionals showed you two completely different ways to swing and both told you that their way was the right way, you would have been forced to make your best guess.

Maybe you would have chosen the information from the pro who was most well known, or the one you could play the best, or the one you listened to most recently. Regardless, with no solid way to choose one way over the other, you would be forced to go from one method to the next indefinitely.

The good news is there is now a proven way to determine which swing method is best for you. It’s simple. It’s easy. And, it works every time.

The secret is to start with impact!

While there are hundreds, or maybe even thousands of different swing methods, there is only one way the club needs to be at impact to hit a desired shot. If your club is in that position, you’ll get the results you want. If it’s not, you won’t. It’s that simple.

Impact is often called the moment of truth because it’s the most important aspect of your golf swing. If you want to find your best swing, and end swing confusion forever, the secret is to relate every swing change to impact.

For example, if you want to know whether one set-up is better than another, figure out which one allows you to swing your club into the ideal position at impact in the easiest, most comfortable, most powerful way. If you want to know whether a flatter or a more upright backswing is best, notice which way makes it easiest for you to achieve the ideal impact position.

While there are numerous swing methods, there is only one way to swing that is the, easiest, most comfortable, and most powerful way for YOU! Trust that the swing that feels best is the right way to swing and you’ll end swing confusion forever!

Find out about the Upsetting Condition that Is Hair Loss in Men

The most worldwide style of baldness is a systematic hair deteriorating state labelled androgenic alopecia more often acknowledged as male pattern baldness that transpires in fully developed male individuals and various other wild life.

Plus, pattern baldness is also hereditary, & the genetic material is transferred to a baby from either parent, and not just the female, as had been formally deemed. Pattern baldness in blokes is the most universal brand of hair loss, & by and large entails a reducing hairline & hair loss on the peak of the cranium. The major cause of baldness in guys is dihydrotestosterone, or abbreviated to DHT, a consequence of the male hormone testosterone. An additional cause of baldness in men is hairstyle.

Hair loss is not only a human attribute. Hair loss is a condition where there is no hair in the part where it grows, generally this is on the head & crops up in either human beings & wildlife. Baldness in guys is normal for the reason that each and bloke has a hair loss causing factor in his system. If you have thin, fine or damaged hair, then visit the Advanced Hair Studio site today!

Hair loss is in fact a startling thing to go through, especially for gentleman, in which this is much more exacting. Blokes who are not pleased with their physical state might plump for medicine that are capable of stimulating the regrowth of hair stems and help to cut down on future hair loss.

What causes male-pattern baldness is when the hair strands starts to disappear as a result of a build-up of the hormone testosterone & some of the natural body oils. What most people rarely recognise is that the result of baldness are related to many things that continually have little or nothing to do with hair stimulation or hair loss. Male hair loss, male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia, is a genetic form which produces male baldness or substantial male hair loss in a considerable 66% of all blokes.

Web Templates: Replacing Designers?

Comments Off

I’ve seen articles (and websites) that suggest you can buy a website template and skip the expense of hiring a professional website designer. Recently, I read several testimonials from the very satisfied customers of a website template vendor that mentioned how quickly they were able to get their sites done. The template vendor commented that he/she had known people to complete their websites in around two hours.

With experiences and statements like these, it not surprising that more and more people are attempting to build websites themselves. I think that’s great in a way. For those of us who are concerned about the trends in the web industry and community, it’s great to see more people becoming web oriented and involved.

However, I think there is a misunderstanding by many of these people about what a website template really is – and is not. At this point, I think it only fair that I should mention that I am a professional website designer (the person you supposedly don’t need anymore). I should also mention that this is not my sole motivation for questioning this idea of templates replacing web designers. As a matter of fact, I think website templates are extremely useful. I recommend using them to my clients as a way of getting a great graphical look for their site. What I hope to convey is that template consumers need to know what they are and what they aren’t getting with a template.

Consider an analogy for templates: pretty boxes for very important gifts. If you buy a pretty box, and put all the right stuff inside it – won’t everybody want to open the box and use the contents? Doing it yourself will save time and money – so why not? Sounds good, and the people who wrote those testimonials would certainly think it was a good idea – right?

But let’s consider the contents of the box. Aren’t you the best possible source for information about your company, organization, product or service? Of course you are! So the content of your box is bound to be great – right? Well – yes and no. Good web designers know that their clients are the best sources for the information that needs to be presented on their websites. However, they recognize that not everyone can organize that information in the optimal way for inclusion in a web page. If the contents in the box are wonderful, but jumbled, or hard to get out of the box, people may not like the box (or worse yet – the owner of the box). Just as a badly considered gift (even a beautifully wrapped one) may offend someone, a poorly organized site can actually harm your efforts.

Take the analogy a bit further. Assume that all concerns about the content are dealt with: it’s perfectly organized and you’ve got a knack for writing copy that would make most professional journalists green with envy! Voila: great looking presentation, content and organization! Now you’ve got it made – or do you? Where is the box? Your audience needs to find this incredible box before they can open it.

A website template, no matter how beautifully designed or filled, is a box in the middle of a desert. Without adding content and description meta tags, titles, alternate content, proper use of text links and alternate navigation and registering the site with search engines, directories and obtaining useful links (to name but a few of the technical considerations), your pretty box may remain in the middle of that desert. It does no good for anyone if it isn’t findable on the web.

A website template is a pretty box. Pretty boxes make a difference or we wouldn’t all spend so much time wrapping all the gifts we give. Some people make their own boxes and wrapping paper – and that’s really great. But most of us buy mass-produced boxes and wrapping paper. It saves time and money. So do templates. But none of us would assume that boxes or wrapping paper would make up for a poor gift. Website templates make sense if they are kept in perspective as a specialization of labor in the production of websites. They are not however, a substitute for the experience, knowledge and judgment of professionals who have a vested interest in your success.

Graduation hats

In America, graduation hats are designated according to one’s field of study. This is as decided by the American Council on Education in 1986. If you are graduating, your graduation hat should only be made using black cotton poplin, broadcloth, silk or rayon so as to match your gown. However, velvet is reserved for those who are graduating with Doctoral degree. Graduation hats are square in shape and should be worn parallel to the ground. The hat is also known as square or mortarboard or trencher cap. Doctorate students in most universities have graduation hats that are rounded, called tams or tudor bonnets.
