EPT News The European Poker Tour Copenhagen Main Event proved to be a bit disappointing this year with a small turn out. There were only 423 entrants and not many well-known poker online celebrities showing up to play. The winner, Anton Wiggs from Sweden, won the 37,250 Danish kroner buy-in and took home 672,000 in prize money. The final table of nine featured six Scandinavian players. Second place winner, Francesco De Vivo, is from Italy and he won 416,000. Denmark was represented by four poker online players at the final table, with Richard Loth finishing best among them in fifth place for 130,000. This year’s small turn-out was blamed on the simultaneous staging of the first North American Poker Tour, which attracted many poker celebrities that participate in the poker online tournament circuit around the world. The next stop for the EPT is in March in Berlin, which is the first time it has been held in Germany’s capital city instead of the traditional location of Dortmund. Other upcoming events will held in several European cities, including: Saalbach/Hinterglemm, Austria, from March 21-26; San Remo, Italy from April 15-21; Le Sporting Club, Monaco, April 25-30. The San Remo buy-in is 5,000+300 Euro with a cap at 1,100 players. The Monaco buy-in is 10,000+600 Euro with a 1,000 player limit.

poker players know that pot odds should dictate many betting decisions. Pot odds are established by calculating the size of the pot in relation to the size of the bet and the probability of drawing the right poker card to complete a hand. If the pot pays more than the draw probability, than the pot odds are good. For instance, 8 outs for an open-ended straight, gives a probability of 5-1. If the pot has 60 chips in it and the bet to call is 10, then the pot is paying 6 to 1 on the bet. The 5 to 1 draw against a 6 to 1 pay out is good odds. Sometimes the pot odds are marginal or almost even – a 5 to 1 probability into a pot that will pay 4 to 1 on the bet. In this instance, a player must consider “implied pot odds” – that is, how many more bets can you expect to go into the pot to make it significantly larger. While the pot odds might be questionable post-flop, they could improve considerably at the turn, especially if you hit your draw. The best way to figure out implied odds is to know your opponents. How many other poker online players are in the pot to keep building it? Can you expect anyone to call a bet if you hit your draw to complete the winning hand? If you think your opponents will continue to build a big pot, then even though your pot odds are marginal on the flop, the implied pot odds after the turn can justify a call with when the pot odds are just offering a coin-toss break-even outcome.

"Steal-Raise" as a Texas Holdem Strategy

It seems like every day there is a new Texas Holdem strategy on the internet that needs to be discussed. One of the newest ideas to pop onto the poker scene is “steal-raise”, a strategy where a player realizes after everyone else at the table has checked. Before you employ this strategy, you need to consider the very serious drawbacks to trying to use this in a real life game.

First of all, how often are you playing a game of poker and everyone at the table checks? It doesn’t happen very often so the required set up for a steal raise is an aberration in itself. You definitely can’t count on being put on this position with any regularity. You would also need to be playing from a late position to even make this feasible. As we all know, the coveted late positions are gone far too quickly for us to really take advantage of their usefulness.

The other significant problem with a steal raise is that there is no requirement that the other poker players fold when faced with your bold raise. They could just as well decide to stay in the game, which would put you in a tricky position. You would then have to trundle to the end of the game with lukewarm cards and a large pot at risk.

If every decision in online poker were black and white, it would be a much easier poker online game. If the flop makes your hand, you stay in and bet, and if you miss the flop, you fold and wait for the next one. Unfortunately, things are usually not that simple-oftentimes you’ll get a flop that’s good news/bad news, and you will end up needing to make a judgment call. It’s pretty rare for you to flop a full house or an Ace flush. More often, you end up flopping top or middle pair, or even two pair with a flush or straight draw on the board. At this point, you’ve got a decision to make-should you stay in the casino hand and defend it, or should you let it go and wait for a stronger hand. If you’re in a late betting position, and you’ve got a table that reacts favorably to betting, you can save your hand with a good semi-bluff. When I flop a hand that may lose value as more cards are revealed, I tend to bet more aggressively in order to chase the rest of the players out of the hand. This keeps anyone from drawing out on my top pair and gives me a few more blinds to burn.
