- Are you targeting keyword phrases that people are searching for these days? – Have you studied what your competitors are doing recently? – How many inbound links from quality, related sites do you currently have? – Has your SERP or Google PR changed?

If you have another person looking at your site, watch that person’s eye movement, observe if any pauses suggest confusion, and listen to the commentary and questions.

Check that the content is current. If you still advertise a special that expired two months ago, for example, it looks like no one is attending to the business.

Do you offer as many payment options as possible? Perhaps you couldn’t afford a merchant account to accept credit card payments when you were starting out, but you can now. If visitors often get to the point of sale and then leave, a lack of payment choices that suit them may be the reason.

Keeping customers coming back

Think about your successes over the past year. What products or services were the most popular? How did people find out about them? What positive feedback did you receive? Use all of that information to make your strengths even better.

If you received any negative feedback, look at it as an opportunity to improve your service or product line.

An opt-in mailing list or newsletter is a low-cost, effective way to keep your company name in your customers’ minds. During the order process, provide a check box for customers to choose if they want to receive mailings from you. If they choose yes, you have their permission to send them information about specials, new products, and other news.

People online are becoming increasingly annoyed by spam and aware of privacy issues. Your website should include a privacy policy, and your mailings should include a link for recipients to unsubscribe if they want to. Don’t send out regular mailings more than once a month, and provide information that’s useful to the recipients.

Regular new, quality content attracts more visitors to your site and provides a reason to come back. Once thought of as a fad for personal sites, increasingly more businesses are adding blogs to their websites. Social media continues to grow and become popular but it is not a popularity contest to have the most “friends”, connections, subscribers. It is about building relationships the good old fashioned way – providing value. We are friends with people because they make our lives better. Better being fun, lend a hand, share interests, etc.

Being popular is important in high school. Sitting at the table at lunch with the cool kids, being invited to parties, paling around or dating the kid that everyone wants to be like. That’s trying to win the popularity contest. It is not real different in college when joining a sorority/fraternity or an organization of interest. We are out of our comfort zone and want to be accepted. The same holds true for social media but the rules are different. You cannot just show up to see and be seen and nod your head as a hello and people accept you.

6 Basic Fundamentals of Social Media

1. Determine your own Social Media Persona. Where do you fit in? Are you engaging social media for business or personal or both? What are your expectations of the relationships you will build and how will you add value?

2. Be around. This does not mean every second of every day. Determine when is best for you and stick to it. It is not set in stone, but after a while people may forget and when you come back you may not be accepted.

3. Be Consistent. Again it is not a popularity contest and commenting with one view and then going to another blog or forum with the complete opposite view does not make people value your opinion and trust you. Zero value.

4. Admit Mistakes. In social media it is so easy to ignore and move on. You are not seeing the person face to face therefore it is easy to think that no-one will notice. Be honest, “Hey I made a mistake.” This will go a long way in building relationships.

5. Be Patient. Personal relationships are not built in a day. You are not going to go up to someone you just met and ask them over for dinner.

6. Be Valuable. Once you have developed your persona and determine where you fit it, engage people. Seek out people with common interests and post things that they will find interesting. It is about them, not you.

A part of adding value is being in your own comfort zone. Are you more comfortable with tweeting than leaving blog comments? Do you find articles you like and share? How much do you share?

Social media is just not a popularity contest. How many times do you see people posting on Twitter that they got 10,000 followers by doing X. There is no engagement, no chance you can be friends with 10,000 people. Really, social media is not a popularity party, it is an opportunity to build relationships and share.

If you have been keeping up with the latest internet marketing
and SEO trends, you might already be aware that, for many… the
Adsense bonanza has come to a screeching halt. The glory days of
page and directory generation software has come and gone, as the
search engines have caught on and struck back with a vengeance.

Hundreds of millions of pages, created by this type of software,
have been banned forever. Once high flying websites have fallen
back down to earth with a resounding thud… leaving their
owners with only a memory of those sweet dollars-for-clicks and
a big fat PR 0 for their troubles.

So is that it? Game over?

Or could there be some new magical SEO technique, that can once
again give marketers the upper hand in capturing those elusive
contextual advertising dollars?

Well… I have some good news and some bad news.

The bad news is that it’s become near impossible for website
owners to get their pages indexed by the search engines. Used to
be, you could just purchase a couple of high PR links and the
search engines would come-a-calling in no time. Not anymore. And
we all know that automated page builders are a losing
proposition… although some marketers figure they can spit web
pages out faster than the search engines can find and de-list
them. Even time tested favorites like cloaking seem to have lost
their efficiency.

But… the good news is, that there still remains a relatively
easy way to get your pages indexed by the search engines. And
we’re talking in a matter of days to a few short weeks.

How? BLOGS baby!

Blogs? You bet.

More specifically, a blog farm or network of blogs…. all niche
or topic related. You know… ordinary stuff, like: unusual baby
names, tasty casserole recipes, facial care, motorcycle racing,
tropical fish, antique watches… all sorts of things that
people like to discuss.

And do you want to know what’s really awesome?

Search engines absolutely LOVE Blogs!

In fact, the “king” of search engines, Google, even has their
very own search tool dedicated to finding content on blogs. It’s
in beta now, but will be in full release soon.

So, if Google thinks that Blogs should have their own unique
search engine… doesn’t that tell you something?

And just why do Google, MSN, Yahoo and other search engines love
blogs so much? Simple really…

1. Blogs are where people like to hang out.. kind of like an
online coffee shop.

2. Unlike web pages, blogs can’t be spit out by the tens of
thousands.

3. Blogs are always changing and updating, as fresh new content
is added.

Which all adds up to one thing. One very important thing. Blogs
get spidered (visited by search engine robots)! And spidering
leads to indexing, which leads to rankings, which leads to page
views, which leads to clickable ads, which leads to clicks,
which leads to $$$… if you get my drift.

Now, let’s suppose that you had links on these blogs… links
that pointed back to your website(s). Wouldn’t it make sense
that the search engine spiders would gleefully follow them back
your domain(s)? And don’t you think that you just might get some
PR brownie points for all those non-reciprocal keyword relevant
links?

Off course!

I know, I know. You’re thinking that most blogs have that darn
“no follow” tag in their links to prevent that from
happening?

And you’re right… they do.

Which is exactly why you must treat your blog farm, just like a
real farm… by planting good seeds and by using the right
tools.

Done correctly, you can once again have an abundant harvest…

Keywords and Ad Words aren’t the only way that search engines score relevancy; links to other similar sites are another important factor. Keywords have been so abused by some webmasters that links are winning much more relevancy points. Google is said to love them. It might sound strange to suggest that your users should check out your competitors, but they probably know about them anyway.

If your competitors have a higher ranking than you, linking to them can often give you a higher relevancy score with the search engines and the subsequent increase in traffic will make it worth your while.

Alternatively, you can link to your own site by creating a subdirectory. This is like building another web page, but the URL will include your keyword. So if you were selling stuffed toys, the new URL would be YourDomain.com/stuffed-toys/stuffed-toys.html.

You could then write a short paragraph on the home page, describing the new page and including a link. You’ll get big relevancy points for this!

Reciprocal Links

Reciprocal linking means forming partnerships with other sites who place a link from their web pages to yours. You give them a similar link in return.

When you look for people to swap links with, make sure that you don’t reduce the quality or content of your own site. You don’t want users to click straight through without reading your content; you want them to buy first. One way to stop them from running away too quickly is to create a “Resources Page” and link to that page from your homepage. This doesn’t take away from the content on your homepage and the links are just one click away rather than being buried deep within the site, giving value to your partners.

In any case, you want to be sure that your site is more than just a page full of links. If your site contains more links than content, it will not be attractive to webmasters, search engines or users.

Picking Your Partner

Your link partners should be sites your target market will visit. Think about your product and its subject area and brainstorm to determine where people interested in your product might be looking online. For example, if you’re trying to sell a book about blackjack strategy, it makes sense that the people visiting online casinos would make great customers. Online casinos then could be good partners. Identify top-ranked, high quality casino sites and find the email address of their webmasters. You can also identify your competitors, see where they trade links and then follow suit.

In this day and age we have many reasons to believe that we just might have a virus. In the past we only had to make sure our anti-virus software was up-to-date and if by some fluke chance we contracted a virus that was new and undetectable to virus software we needed to contact our anti-virus software makers to let them know and receive their experience and technical aptitude in solving our virus problem.

Now-a-days there is a new kind of problem cropping up, and it’s becoming more and more common. Virus hoaxes are a well-known catch phrase and you might have heard of them in the news or read about them somewhere on-line. A virus hoax is most commonly spread in the form of e-mail and is designed to make the receiver of the email to believe that their computer security has been compromised.

Most commonly the email will tell the recipient that their computer is infected with a virus and they must delete “such and such a file”. Step-by-step instructions are usually included and if the person reading the email is fooled, a file crucial to their computers operations can be deleted. There are many that will try to play on the fear factor and get you to send them your login information to verify your identity as well.

There are usually very easily spotted warning signs common to all hoax emails that you should know about. The first sign that usually gives the hoax away completely is the request in the email for you to “send this email to everyone you know”. No credible source will ask you to send the email to all the people you know. Secondly the email will be trying to sound credible and technical. By saying that their email has been provided by a well-known authority on viruses and providing links to that site, a lot of people will be more likely to believe the email. Check the site that is linked to, if you get a generic homepage for say.. Mcafee or Symantec, you more than likely have a hoax. Generally a well-known corporation will have specific information linked in their warning email.

Another way to make sure you are not being hoaxed is to check the major sites of virus and security to see if the email you received has been indexed as being a hoax. McAfee and Symantec both have pages dedicated to hoaxes. As well there are other sites loaded with info to check out for virus hoaxes.

Most of all it’s just a good idea to take a sceptical eye when reading anything you receive on the internet. Just because something has been written down/typed out and hailed as truth, does not mean it is so. Keep your eyes open and your computer virus-free.

Beta Testing First Mobile Internet Satellite Broadband, Part I

Being on the road has its advantages; the freedom is the biggest one. One draw back was the Internet Service, but having done much study on the mobile Internet Satellite Systems and future technologies; I was able to become a beta tester of the MotoSat system in 1999. I have used the system ever sense.

My company, the Car Wash Guys had joined forces with a Strategic Alliance of GM Hughes Satellite Division to beta test the First Fully Self contained, fully Networked Mobile Corporate Office, taking advantage of the newest in WiFi technology. We were the first in the world to have this powerful capabilities which at the time nearly blew away the Pentagon’s Performance with their 77 million dollar investment and Iridium Bailout.

Mobile Corporate Offices are the Wave of the future, where Network Centric Warfare (Net-Centric) in the marketplace combined with strategic mobile command centers used to create a network of networks, which will eventually dominate all of their market sectors. Corporate Giants are slowly learning the game is changing. And we are the ones teaching them. We are the leaders in technology and they will have to learn the hard way. Car Wash Guys are leading everyone’s industry this time. As far as the car wash industry is concerned we left them in the dust a decade ago. Today we use 20 times less water, a third of the labor and spend less than a tenth of the capital to do it. We now have much bigger fish to fry as we go for the gold. To work with this technology you must move your business at the speed of thought.

We at our Bravo research team of WashGuys, had been studying the newest in satellite technologies. Most of our recent studies have been on satellite data transmissions and as many of you know we have become very knowledgeable over the years with satellite communications, I happened to live next door in Malibu from a physicist who worked at the Rockwell Research Center in Thousand Oaks CA. First we would like to talk about actually data transmission speeds and problems associated with relays and problems of security of data when data jumps from satellite to satellite or from satellite to ground. Also with the problems of relay where any and all data can be recorded. As everyone knows the Pentagon bailed out the Iridium project, which is good since we have learned so much from this. The 75 million dollar contract helped pay the bills of 7 million a month including the 40 million per year to Boeing who flies the satellites. Iridium was nice in that it covered the whole Earth, all oceans and remote areas, with spare satellites ready just in case. Iridium had 66 satellites in orbit in use at about 485,000 up. Very close and helps with data lag associated with satellites which is normally a half second or more. The data can be transmitted at 1Mbs, which is slow considering the Wash Guys data transmission capabilities of 10-12.265 Mps up load and the 1Mbs download, faster than that of the US Department of Defense. The other problem we see with their system is the relay in Tempe, AZ home of Motorola, which is unsafe due to the newest wave of possible terrorist devices such as the brief case electronic impulse devises which work from building tops and could easily destroy its relay station. This is why other systems, which are not voice systems and generally web based and data use satellites are much better such as the Globalstar System.

With Globalstar, which is in debt and filed bankruptcy, due to small amount of debt to Qualcomm who is also in trouble and Loral, it may cease to exist. EuroCom has a neat system, which is used in the shipping industry and there is an interesting article in Professional Mariner this month about them and a few others. It is similar to Imersat and supports PBX and PABX systems on ships. Of course the bent pipe approach by GlobalStar is worth considering its 48 operational satellites and the four spares. Only real problem is the range of 70 degrees north to 60 degrees south. And also the gaps if you let’s say in the middle of the ocean at sea level in the South Atlantic and or middle of the Pacific. Several satellites can transmit the coded signal but unlike the Iridium system the Satellites do not talk to themselves. But all in all Global Star data transmissions are still about 9.6 KBPS and actually slightly less than the Iridium system, which does not have the lapse in service.

The Iridium of course is the Arthur C. Clark theory in practice and is worthy of note; the big problem right now with data transmission is the problems with direct sight to satellite, which we have encountered. Hard for submarines, and below decks on vessels or in buildings. Good for catching bad guys who have to go out in the open to use the phone, they do not work in caves either. Iridium like all of Microsoft software has triple redundancy, and uses CDMA technologies to gateway the data from transmission point into the terrestrial system. Inmarsat Systems include the I-4 system, which can transmit data at 432 MBPS turns out to be excellent for things like video conferencing. The newest satellites by Inmarsat are said to be able to 10 times more communications than the current ones. Since the Inmarsat satellites are at 22,300 miles up three satellites cover the Earth with 3 back-ups. But remember with that altitude there is a time delay. You will notice this when you see video feed from the Middle East Wars on live broadcasts on TV, CNN.
