Obtain your credit report before you apply for a car loan. You’re allowed by law to get one free credit report every year, from each of the three credit agencies. These are Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, Equifax being the most popular bureau used by creditors. Getting your Beacon score is going to cost you. Most of these bureaus charge a monthly fee for access to your report and score so that you can keep track of what’s going on with your report. This will cost you in the neighborhood of $16 to $30 a month.

After you’ve gotten your credit report, make sure that there are no discrepancies. Negative credit that honestly doesn’t belong to you can be refuted. Be sure to update incorrect personal information as well, such as your address and employment. These two are the most common mistakes on credit reports. Also, if you have a positive credit account that isn’t showing on your report, make sure to get it reported. It certainly isn’t going to do you any harm.

Remember that these changes are going to take a month to go into effect.

If you know what your Beacon score is, here is the simplest way to rate it:

600 and above: Likely to get a loan without any problems, the higher the better.

600 – 550: troubled credit. Creditors are going to consider you a risk.

540 – below: poor credit. This is when real trouble starts.
