Missional church is definitely a trendy title that is everywhere these days. the idea that we are obligated to label churches, missional, has forever been weird to me. I ask you, shouldnt all church buildings be missional in their very character? why cant a church, at its very base, want to introduce their culture and area with the message of Jesus as a missionary would in a foreign country? Isnt that what the churches is encouraged to do in the sending out by Jesus in Matthew 28:19? Our own local area requires this brand of church. Churches in Austin is slowly gravitating to what Christ instructed in the Bible.

The messiah gives the direction in Acts 1:8 saying, “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8 explains this topic as, right before Jesus Christ leaves to go to Heaven, He commissions the disciples on a story that would initiate right in their individual community. He begins with their hometown of Jerusalem, and then stretches the call to the far parts of the earth.

As disciples of Jesus, we are not motivated to social clubs, but to be missional believers who are anxiously going out and meeting people right where they are with the gospel. We have seen this throughout history: God moved Abraham on a mission to go out of his country and his people and go to the place that God would show him (Gen. 12:1), God urges Moses on a journey to rescue an enslaved people and lead them to freedom (Exodus 3:8-10), God motivated Jesus on a mission to creation to restore all things to Himself through the death of Jesus (Colossians 1:20). And now God is sending us on a journey to engage homes, cities, people groups, and even nations with the message of Jesus (Matt. 28:19 Mark 6:7 Luke 10:1 John 20:21 Acts 1:8). If we resist this motivation and continue to display the bodies of Christ like a private country club ” demanding that people straighten up their act, pay their dues, and visit to our place of worship God will continue His exploration without us.
